Reading 3: The art of VJing

"The ancient world intellectuals acknowledged the link between the aural and visual senses. The Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras originally defined harmony as peace and a general feeling of agreement according to his mathematical definition of balance that pertained to musical intervals as well as colors."


The agreement between visual and aural senses, as said by Pythagoras, is highly required and needed when performing live. The awareness of such skill to know what is visually pleasing along with an atmosphere and sound is something that takes work to achieve. With the emergence of music videos, people could present a visual story along with sound was finally expressed. However, when thinking about the live element of VDMX/ VJing - an instrumentalist/ musician may find it hard to


VJ today emerged with DJ, as previously we looked at instrumentalist play during their performance, but with the personal computer and DJ, there needed to be more visual performance. Therefore, VJing emerged faster with the laptop era; due to the increased accessibility of laptops, more people could explore the realm of telling a visual story through live video editing. Therefore, digital art today has created a whole new way for society to connect with art through its increased accessibility. At the same time, this was seen with the large emergence of DJs, who found a new, easy way to create music. But while more accessible the laptop era has made art, it still does take away the importance of visual aesthetics and, more specifically, the psychoacoustics principles that go along with VJing.
