Reading 2: AI generated Art, won a prize, but is it art?

At the beginning of the semester in September, we began exploring the possibilities of AI-generated artwork using Night Cafe and Mid-journey. Initially, I thought that AI-generated artwork was cheating since DALL-E 2, Mid-journey, and stable diffusion tools made it possible to create abstract and photorealistic paintings by inputting only a few words. Therefore, taking away the long process of developing and manually creating an image without assistance. On the other hand, artists work hard to conceptualize and build their ideas onto paper, so inputting a few words to create an image is perceived as cheating. However, similar arguments surrounding the invention of photographic cameras occurred with painters.

In September, Mr. Allen's Mid-journey creation won the digital art segment at the Colorado state fair, being the first AI-generated art piece to win a prize. The guidelines for digital artwork included digital art/ digitally manipulated photography. Therefore AI-generated art is no different from photoshop or other digital manipulation tools.

Through my experience with Mid-journey and Night Cafe, coming up with the right prompts to create an interesting image is crucial and requires talent to know how the machine will gather the data to create the desired output. Therefore, while people believe AI art is the "death of art," I think it can aid and socially bring people closer to art, making it more accessible. In addition, art helps boost economies and strengthens communities by preserving many cultures. While digital art is prevalent in society today, the AI aspect is still very controversial; however, it is no different from the criticism that occurred with photography, digital editing tools, and computer-assisted design programs. Therefore, there is still room for acceptance of the value that AI art can instill into society, similar to the value brought by other types of digital art such as animation, VJing, and 3D rendering, all requiring human skill, which evolved from traditional painting
